Water Sanitation, Basic Infrastructure, and Hygiene Promotion Project for Pastoral and Agro pastoral Communities in Somali Region

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Brief Overview

This project was targeting both pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in four districts; three in Siti zone (Afdem, Meayso, Dambal districts) and one in Fafan zone (Kebribayah District) of Somali Regional State with the major aim of improving health and livelihoods as well as education. 140,000 people were directly targeted by the project with a total budget of Euro 2,157,937 with 25% of SCI contribution by ECHO for a period of three years (December 2011— November 2014). The project was implemented by Save the Children, UNISOD and ACPA.

Goal of the project

To contribute to the achievement of the MDGs 4,5, and 6 targets of water, hygiene and sanitation for the Pastoral and Agro pastoral Communities in Somali Regional State of Ethiopia.

Specific Objectives

To improve health and livelihoods of 140,000 people in 4 districts of Somali Region as a result of improved access to water and sanitation facilities and improved sanitation and hygiene behaviors

Results

  1. Increased access to and multi use of improved water supplies for 77,000 Pastoral and Agro pastoral people
  1. Improved access and utilization of safe household and institutional latrines through CLTSH adapted for agro-pastoralists with particular focus on children
  2. Strengthened capacity of government and non-governmental stakeholders as well as local partners for sustainable WASH program management
  3. Lessons learned and operational research carried out and findings disseminated on innovative WASH initiatives
  4. Improved governance and accountability for water management

Main activities carried out in the project sites

  • Construction and rehabilitation of birkas
  • Construction and rehabilitation of hand dug wells
  • Construction of roof  water harvesting reservoir
  • Construction of latrines and school WASH clubs
  • Communities mobilization for CLTSH

This project has supported many first cycle primary schools in the target groups and great impacts have been reported by the child beneficiaries. For instance, in Gerbi village in Kebrbayah, Jirri village in Dambal district and Goldahanley village in Kebribeyah district. Their interesting story was narrated by a twelve year old girl who is a member of the school WASH club.
