PROJECT OVERVIEW

Brief Overview

The recently completed Emergency Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (School Wash) in Siti and Fafan Zones, Somali Region project for drought stricken population in Siti and Fafan Districts had a budget of USD $ 248,033 and was funded by UNICEF. The six month project was designed to improve sustainable access to safe water in ten UNICEF supported target schools in Siti and Fafan zones, all now facing acute water scarcity, also improving access to quality education in the same areas by establishing WASH facilities in the ten identified schools, together with a hygiene promotion program.

Main Objective

  • To contribute towards the improvement on overall health conditions as well as teaching &learning environment in the schools in target districts.

Specific Objectives

  • To construct improved sanitation facilities with hand washing and separated boys and girls
  • To minimize the time elapsed for the search of water and latrines by students, “mainly girls” and thus improve learning conditions
  • To increase the hygiene awareness of the students through establishing water sanitation clubs, (conducting hygiene workshops, and training water sanitation Clubs members to disseminate/ teach the importance of personal & community hygiene for public health to their

Project Benificiaries

  • All school aged children in the 10 schools in both zones. Kawnayne, Tulu Gulade, Fafen, Wilwal primary schools of Jijiga Zone and Dambel, Arabi, Harmukale, Shinile, Harewa and Kelebeyed primary schools in Shinile Zone are among selected schools in Jijiga and Shinile Zones.

OUTPUT 1: INCREASED ACCESS TO SAFE DIRKING WATER AT SCHOOL FACILITIES

1.     Integrated WASH in School

Hussein Gire Public School, Jigjiga town:

One Hand Dug well has successfully rehabilitated. The constructions of new hand dug well also completed at the end of January 2009. On New Submersible pump with capacity of 30 meter total discharge is fitted. One hand pump is fitted for incase of power failure or any other problems so the student have an access to a water. Construction of one water point and Fiber Glass stand have completed up to 100%. One Fiber Glass water tank with capacity of 5000 liter is purchased and installed at nearby both Hand Dug wells and water point.

The scheme has benefitted to a total of 3685 student (2291 males and 1394 females). In addition, 81 teachers (41 males and 40 females) have also benefitted from the scheme. In total, 3766 beneficiaries are recorded. This was believed to have enhanced the school learning and teaching environment.

Ahmed Gurey Public School, Jig-Jiga town, Jig-Jiga District of Jig-Jiga Zone:

The construction of one supper structure with 4 seat latrine for girls is completed at the end of December 2008 and operational. 1326 females have benefitted from the scheme of which 1326 are female students and 31 female teachers. The scheme is meant only for female so as to enhance retention and quality of education in the school. The extension of the existing water pipe have omitted because the Regional Water Bureau have also implemented the same activity with UNICEF fund, therefore in order to avoid duplication of activity both extension of pipeline and water is omitted, the budget is used for the additional expenditure for Hussein Gire and Lafa Isse, Roto Tank and its stand construction which was not included in the allocated budget

Lafe-Isse Public School, in lafa isse town of Aw-bare District, Jig-Jiga Zone:

For this school, ane Supper Structure VIP latrine of 6 Seat for only girls has been completed. In addition, two water points as well as purchase and the installation of 5000 litre capacity of 1.5 meter high Roto tank stand have been completed. An extension of water pipe up 150 meter is completed.

Erer Public School in Erer town, Erer District of Shiniile Zone:

For Erer public school, two two water points, renovation of one latrine with 12 seats has been completed and put to function. The total users of the latrine facilities are 721 female. However, the whole scheme has benefitted a total of 2726 beneficiaries of which 2675 are males (1975 male students and 30 male teachers) and 721 females (700 female students and 21 female teachers)

Abdimajid Public School, (Kebri Bayah):

Renovation of one latrine, installation and supply of one Roto tank with capacity of 5000 litter were completed and benefitted the target students and teachers.

OUTPUT 2: IMPROVED HYGIENE AND SANITATION AT HEALTH FACILITIES

  •  Integrated WASH in Health Institutions: Total direct beneficiaries of the health seeker is estimated to be around 20,000 people per month of which more than 98% are females and children. Details of the accomplished activities are presented below by facility and location.
  • Lafe-Isse health Clinic, Lafa Isse-town of Aw-bare District of Jig-Jiga Zone : Two water points for hand washing facility and 150 meter distance Extension/Rehabilitation of water pipe are completed and providing services for the meant target communities visiting the health
  • Shinile health Clinic, Shinile town of Shinile District of Shinile Zone: Construction of water points, elevation of roto tank base and two hand wash facilities have been completed and functioning whereby both health facility visitors and workers have
  • Erer Health Centre, in Erer town in Erer District of Siti Zone: Construction of 2 water points; installation of Roto Tank capacity of 5,000 liters, rehabilitation of internal pipe lines and one new latrine of four seats have been successfully completed. In addition, there are two existing two seat latrine in the facility. These structures provide services to 75 student female at the health training centre, health seekers, health centre and health training centre
  • Dhagahbour hospital in Dhagahbour town of Dhagahour Zone: One Roto tank capacity of 5,000 liters and installation as well as construction of 2 water points and one latrine are completed. Construction of one latrine was shifted to Lafa Isse Public School due to shortage of budget for the Lafa isse public school. The decision is made by the donor in consultation with the implementing agency and education

OUTPUT 3: ENHANCED INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Institutional Development
  • Committee Establishment: WASH Club forums were established in Hussein Gire and lafa Isse schools so as to use them as a pilot that will be rolled to other schools if they are found functional and useful for the student and facilities. A 5 days training were provided to each club forum for the school hygiene and sanitation purposes. The clubs will mainly serve as focal points in their schools and expected to educate other students in areas of
  • Establishment of forum: Established and train solid wastage, Sanitation, and pit disposal committees for the schools and health centers in the project areas. A total of 100 students (50% females) were trained in the subject matter and the management of various facilities. is given training for committee and forum. 5 committee members were selected as a steering committee (3 male and 2 female).
